When it rains, it rains pouring in Paraty

I suddenly fell in love with the largest city in the Brazil, but it was not long before I felt the ocean calling me home.

leaving São Paulo, we made our way to the sea, where we planned to flow along the coast up to and beyond Rio de Janeiro. Nestled along the so-called Emerald Coast is a turquoise jewel – the colonial town of Paraty. As we planned the trip, it was one of the stops that I was getting excited. In fact, apart from Rio, it was where we planned to spend the most time.

Paraty is widely hailed as one of the cities of more soaked charm of the Brazil. With a delightfully preserved colonial Center, a mountainous jungle setting and an infinity of tropical beaches and Islands in the Bay, he is almost painfully quaint. The lack of cars in the historic center makes it pleasant to walk aimlessly accurate and easy to imagine that you have traveled back in time.

the city is a magnet for creations and a popular getaway for two rich Brazilians from Rio and São Paulo and in-the-know travelers, mainly in Europe. As two gringas clumsy American, we definitely broke the mold.

while some travellers are troubled by in a day or two to impregnate the white stucco, others – such as we – linger. For those that do, there are a dizzying number of ways to keep entertained you. Schooner cruises of the islands of the archipelago are the most popular choice, although a ride SUP, a hike of beach break, a cooking class, yoga and spa treatments, riding to the farms of cachaça and waterfalls, sea kayaking and rafting were also on our wish list.

when the sun shines, it would be shameful to be bored in Paraty.

then how this dreamy place come to exist in reality?

Paraty is already inhibited by the Guaianas indigenous when the Portuguese first rolled in the 1500s. Within a hundred years, it was a stopover on the road to the gold mines and Rio de Janeiro, a new road later saw the city from greatness. Later, the coffee boom of the city under a new impetus and a new coastal road of Rio has been extended to the 1960 city of tourism since the name of the part of the local economy.

Paraty is playground for a photographer. Heather and I became crazy with our cameras, wander the streets of cobblestones in the search for the next shot of colonial charm to capture through our glasses. Our options were really without end.

for the first time in awhile, I yearned for a notebook of sketches and watercolors, for certain scenes begging just to paint. Paraty is perhaps the most picturesque hamlet that I have encountered in my travels in Luang Prabang in 2012.

pretty amazing, right? Well, here’s the truth. Almost every single photo above was taken in our last three hours from five days to Paraty. The rest of the time, it rained. PLU, cast, or just simply threatened with a dark and threatening sky.

the scene below? It seemed that for our last morning, we have scrambled frantically around the city, trying to get every last click of blue sky, we could. The rest of the time, it looked like this.

as a photographer, I embrace the challenge of trying to find the beauty in every day and the destination, regardless of weather conditions. As a storyteller, I struggle sometimes to paint an accurate picture of the dark how it’s spend day after day vain checking the forecast, heavy-heartedly cancellation of your plans one by one and watch frustratedly dark skies angry when I take pictures paint a sunnier picture.

Yes, we have tried to make the best of things. But, as the these shots of the iPhone in the scenes, we spent a large part of our journey in fortune garbage bag waterproof, laugh so we don’t cry, or taking advantage of breaks in the downpour to jog off our frustration along the stormy cliffs.

while Paraty is a beautiful city, whatever that does the weather, it’s a tiny teeny and boat trips cancelled and left flooded beaches ask us how fill our days. We found a few pearls, which I’ll discuss in a next guide on where to stay, eat and fun in Paraty.

, but we found we was wondering if we had done ourselves a disservice for pre-booking our accommodation and transport so that we had little room for flexibility. We were however reassured by the fact that we would have been more or less stuck, regardless: the storm blowing in the region was extensive and covered all other destinations, we could have easily accessible by bus, and steep prices of Interior of last minute plane tickets make spontaneous difficult swing state-jump, anyway.

after sunny skies and temperatures deliciously warm and Itu in São Paulo, it seemed that our chance of good weather was exhausted. Even the animals in Paraty seemed a little dark, after a few days.

, sometimes when it rains, it pours. Weather is the only thing that can not simply be foreseen when planning a trip. We were visiting at the end of the rainy season, but same inhabitants agreed that storm arriving in the middle of this length and determination has been bad luck, from us. Looking at a map of the historic time for the month we visited, it’s almost comical how temperatures have remained stable in the month, our five day visit-they are the day we arrived and climbed again the day of our departure, while levels of precipitation has done the opposite.

you can not win all MS.

I feel a little sad when I think back on my stay in Paraty, only because I think how frustrated we felt and deplores all the activities have missed us some. I felt a little bit trapped by our rigid and panicked route I wondered if we would be stuck shivering and wet for the rest of our trip. But despite this, I have good memories of Paraty as well – which I’ll share in upcoming posts.

in the end, there are worse places to be stuck in the rain.
