while I continue to summarize the rest of my summer without end, I decided to jump out of chronological order and start sharing excerpts from what I’ve been up to since I reached Asia South-East, this fall. Thanks for sticking with me!
no matter who you are, what stage of life, you are or where you are in the world, neutralize a large group of friends together for a trip is not for the faint of heart. Still one of the highlights of my time in Thailand last year was organize a weekend in a Koh Samui villa for my large family of Koh Tao, and we promised to make it annual.
this year, we made good on that promise with a trip to Bay Villas in Koh Phangan.
after three fabulous days in Koh Samui, Ian and I missed our crew of Koh Tao. Rather than head back to our island home, all seven of us skipped all the ferries for meet in the middle on the island beautiful jungle of Koh Phangan.
I had not really considered Koh Phangan for this particular trip, originally. This is not an island known for excessive luxury – in general, those who seek to stay at five-star hotels or rent head of sumptuous villas in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan is more on the territory of those looking lights in one of the many centres of yoga and meditation of the island and those seeking night life based on the lunar cycle (the Full Moon Party is only the beginning!)
but when I discovered Bay Villas, I knew that I had landed on something special. It is the ideal compromise for those who love the elegant accommodation of Samui, but prefer the relaxed vibes of Phangan. This is the best of both worlds. And it’s all ours, for a weekend much anticipated to have objectivity and quality time.
our plan to leave the humanly possible villa has been confirmed at the time where we laid eyes on it. This kitchen! This pool! This outdoor seating which quickly turned us into an amphitheatre for a round that raged charades cards against humanity!
nestled in the hills above Haad Salad, this chic 4 bedroom villa has prompted many wistful conversations on the pooling of our funds and either move in forever or kick-off a lucrative future of real estate investment, and whereas the villas are actually for sale, it was a rather seductive daydream. Tempting more realistically? In addition to the three magnificent villas which currently make up the residence of the Bay, three luxury apartments are currently under construction.
indoor and outdoor showers? This is how life in the tropics.
our first day on the island was stormy. But that was fine. After all, the fact that it was November and monsoon was what allowed a group of seven Koh Tao – ers, mostly working in the tourism industry, to take a few days off for a getaway with friends.
I like low season in the Gulf of Thailand. Of course, it rains a lot and of course, things snap a slower speed. But there is plenty of room for the promos, much time for persistent conversations and sunshine in which to dry out.
the following day, the Sun we rewarded for our patience. We started things with a mimosa-filled breakfast fuel and an intense debate during which many surfaces we would spend the day, NAP and sunbathing on. For a bunch of Thailand expatriate with cooking of configurations that rarely more consist of a hot plate and a few mismatched forks, being able to Cook Group meals in a sumptuous kitchen looks to choose the winning numbers for powerball.
and talk to a table with a view.
yeah, Ian had a small accident – later. At least it should recover in paradise!
after breakfast, she was no longer a full day of fun in the Sun. I could easily spend a week like that; read, laugh, nibbling, swimming and sunbathing. Holiday, I think I love you.
late in the afternoon, the girls and I decided to take a walk to Haad Salad. After three big meals we were running a little low on supplies and so our mission was part aimlessly wander, part supply mission of gathering. The beach was less than one in ten minutes on foot, and we marveled at the quiet beauty of this portion of the island of charm.
However, food retailers are quite limited. If you are lucky enough to head towards Bay Villas yourself one day, do all your shopping in Thongsala before exiting in Haad Salad. Makro is ideal for shopping in bulk, Tesco Lotus and Big C are good for packaged foods and fresh fruit and vegetables are a bet according to the arrival of the last great expedition.
elegance and grace
before this trip, I had stepped foot on Koh Phangan three times. Twice for the Full Moon Party, where I arrived just before sunset the Sun and left shortly after the Sunrise, never bothering to booking a slot; and once for a two night getaway girlfriend visit a recently relocated friend of Koh Tao. Despite our exploration limited during these 48 hours, they fueled my fire only to return again in the future.
Although really, I’d go anywhere with this crew. I am so thankful for this group of friends, some of which have been in my life for more than six years. What I would like to return to Thailand for years? It is a long list, but my family of the island is near the top of it.
I can’t wait to see where our next weekend low season takes us! Are you taking an annual trip with friends? Tell me about it in the!
thanks Bay Villas we welcome on Phangan. As always, you receive my honest thoughts, complete notice and badly written jokes regardless of who is paying the Bill.
